never have I read a more titillating lead-in

"UNLESS PAUL Martin starts appearing at news conferences in an evening gown and lipstick, or wearing a Nazi uniform on Parliament Hill, he can count on the votes of almost a third of Canadians.

The only way Mr. Martin can lose those votes is if he'’s caught in bed with either a dead girl or a live boy, in the words of former Louisiana governor Edwin W. Edwards."

[...]

"Mr. Martin is a sort of middle-of-the-road Conservative forced by political circumstances to govern like a left-wing Liberal. Mr. Harper is a Reformer -— well to the right of mainstream Canadian politics -— forced to act like a middle-of-the-road Conservative."

Damn skippy.

That's an interesting article, but I'd like to know how the author "knows" what Harper's "true face" is. More of the "Harper is scary" crap, unfortunately. I'll take scary over corrupt, thanks.

His point, I think, was simply that Harper has managed to temper his public comments in deference to the more moderate views of the average Canadian.

I didn't notice much in the way of value judgement or fear-mongering, as such. He stopped well short of characterizing Harper as "scary" -- "chilly", in terms of persona, was as far as he went.

It may just be my reading of the article, but I don't get the sense that Maher was trying to advance the "hidden agenda" line of thought.
